Smuggling Doll
This doll was used for smuggling medicines during the war. A cavity in the back of her head was packed with quinine, a medication used in the treatment of malaria that is derived from South American tree bark.

Racoon Skin Shoe  
A Confederate soldier in winter quarters on the South Carolina coast made this woman’s shoe from raccoon skin.

Doll’s cradle made by Ben, a slave on the plantation of Jordan Edwards, Sussex County, Virginia

Prosthetic Arm  
This artificial arm, made of boiled leather with brass fittings, belonged to Private Andrew Porter Scott (1829-1916) of the 29th Virginia Infantry. Wounded at Cold Harbor, Virginia, in June 1864, his left arm was amputated at Chimborazo Hospital #3, and Scott was retired to the Invalid Corps.

Watch Chain made from the hair of Traveler  
This chain with gold fittings is made from hair from the tail of Robert E. Lee’s famous horse Traveler. The watch chain belonged to Jefferson Davis, Jr., the eldest son of Confederate President Jefferson Davis.

Bullet “Rosette”
A clipping from a Fredericksburg newspaper accompanied this item, reading: A Rebel and a Yankee bullet met midway, each speeding its way with about the same velocity they struck fairly at the joint of each and united, forming a spiral leaden rosette, about the size of a half dollar…

Hair Picture  
Making jewelry and pictures out of hair was very common during and after the war. This picture was made by Miss Jeanetta E. Conrad of Harrisonburg, Virginia, from hair collected during the Civil War, including Robert E. Lee, Jefferson Davis, and J.E.B. Stuart.

Beef Bone Broach and Earrings  
Carved by a Federal prisoner of war in Libby Prison in Richmond in 1864, this jewelry was given to Captain John Latouche, Adjutant of the prison.

This full mourning costume was worn by Lizzie Smith, and her great niece, of Willow Grove in Mathews County, Virginia.
